Overview

Nestled in Croydon along Mt Dandenong Road, Twisted Zest Cafe and Restaurant offers a modest, yet notable presence in the local café scene. It’s a spot that caters well to casual diners seeking familiar Australian café staples with a slight twist. The location is somewhat tucked away, which lends itself to a quieter experience, though the ambiance struggles to fully deliver the warmth one might expect from a neighborhood café. The interior favors spacious seating arrangements, allowing for comfortable dining without feeling cramped, but the overall decor could benefit from more inviting touches and better upkeep.

Twisted Zest proudly highlights a menu built around fresh, well-executed dishes that mix classic favorites with contemporary café flair. Signature items such as the smashed avocado and Greek salad bring vibrant, light options to the table, while various takes on eggs Benedict—including salmon-topped versions and customized scrambled eggs with mushrooms and spinach—stand out as breakfast mainstays. These showcase the café’s focus on fresh, quality ingredients prepared with care.

For heartier meals, the menu offers a commendable range, notably the Chicken Parmigiana—tender crumbed chicken finished with Virginia ham, Napoli sauce, and melted mozzarella, paired with crisp chips and garden salad. Seafood lovers may gravitate toward the salt and pepper calamari or beer-battered flathead tails, both praised for their crisp texture and fresh flavor. Families with children are also accommodated, though some reviews suggest the kids’ portions might benefit from increased generosity.

The experience here is a blend of highs and room for improvement. Service is generally friendly and attentive, creating a welcoming interaction despite occasional delays in food arrival and some inconsistencies in dish quality—particularly on busier days like Sundays. Coffee receives mixed reviews; while some find it average, others appreciate the effort, especially paired with treats like muffins or hot chocolate, even if sweetness levels vary.

Twisted Zest aims for a varied audience—from solo café visitors seeking a light breakfast to families wanting traditional mains in a casual environment. The café’s relaxed atmosphere supports leisurely meals, though some feel the space and overall environment could be enlivened to better match the quality of the offerings. In all, Twisted Zest Cafe and Restaurant stands as a solid choice for those in Croydon looking for familiar Australian café fare with a few unique touches, served in a calm setting that balances comfort with understated charm.

A nice spot, hidden away and easily missed. The coffee is okay, I’d say average at best. The big breakfast was nice with the cheesy sausage being our favourite. Food was overall good. However the hash browns come out 5mins after the main platter came which was strange. It is a bit pricey, $70 for the two of us… The cafe’s design and atmosphere was dull. There was a shattered window and a lot of the fridge lights were off, wasn’t as welcoming as we hoped.

I usually enjoy coming here, the food is good even if it can be a little slow. However, it seems anytime I go on a Sunday, it takes a dive: the food takes longer and isn't even close to what it usually is. It was $20 and a 15 minute wait for a burned foccacia, with everything on it well overcooked and hardly any hollandaise sauce. Sunday's seems to be a day to avoid...

Food took a while to come out but Parma was very very nice. Kids meal needs to be more generous. Coffee and customer service was lovely.

Was here only for hot chocolate and muffin. First impression was the decor is rather lacking but there was nice amount of space between each tables. Also the table was not cleaned properly (there were crumbs). Staff are generally nice, and muffins and drink came pretty fast. The chocolate muffin was pretty nice. Peppermint hot chocolate was rather too sweet. Might come back one day to have proper meal.

Always a great experience at Twisted Zest! The calamari and chips are a standout! Always fresh, crispy, and full of flavour. I also got an iced chocolate and it was excellent. Friendly service, relaxing atmosphere, and consistently good food. Will definitely be back again soon!

Surprisingly good.. My partner and I live in the area this Cafe is located we have walked past it several times to go to the supermarket near by, but we have never stopped in. Untill, one morning after an early gym workout we were looking to go have breakfast somewhere and none of our usual favourite cafes were open, so I did a quick internet search to see if anything was open for breakfast at 7:30am and I was led to this place so we thought ok let's give it a shot.. And the verdict was good, great coffee, nice service and our breakfast was good with great portions and reasonable prices.

I'll just start this out by saying, I went in expecting a casual brunch with my partner, and came out with my entire day made. It truly was a phenomenal experience. Expectations were blown out of the water time and time again. The service was what really topped this experience. We went in during a quiet ish time and were met with Andrea, a kind and unbelievably considerate woman. We went up to order and unfortunately they had run out of the gnocchi for the pasta. As my partner was craving that dish due to the appetising pictures online, and the description on the menu, this was quite unfortunate. We came up with a plan to ask Andrea, if we could purchase the gnocchi ourselves, bring it back, and still possibly get to eat that dish. She immediately posed the counter offer, that they would go and get it for us specifically, and we wouldn't have to go through with any of that effort. I was taken aback by that response, as I had no intention of asking them to do this for us. She insisted and with guilt in our hearts, we accepted. She mentioned that the food may take a little longer than usual due to running in and grabbing it, but it really wasn't much of a wait at all. The gnocchi came out and was definitely worth asking for. It was creamy but not too thick, the gnocchi itself was cooked beautifully and again, came out only moments after the other portions of our order. I ordered "The Porky" which was essentially an eggs Benedict, with pulled pork and hashbrowns. It was delightful. Didn't feel too heavy as it was surrounded by fresh tomato, Spanish onions and avocado pieces. It was a great portion size and overall a delightful dish. (We didn't grab extra because we weren't hungry enough but, adding TWOOOOO HASHBROWNS, not just one, only came to $7. Based on other cafes I've been to, it's been between $5-7 for just one, and these ones were cooked to perfection too.) We also ordered the Cajun style wedges. They were cooked quite well and seasoned nicely too. Unfortunately the portions of the dip were a little small, but that could also be because my partner and I like to heap it on to each chip for the most flavour. Over all, we loved it and are more than likely to go back there again.
